Rodney Fox and Mark Tozer Marine Conservation and Research Centre: A New Era in Marine Conservation

Rodney Fox and Mark Tozer, both renowned for their lifelong dedication to marine conservation, are excited to announce the launch of the Rodney Fox and Mark Tozer Marine Conservation and Research Centre. This initiative will transform the Rodney Fox Shark Museum and Learning Centre into a comprehensive platform for conservation and research, reflecting a new name and renewed mission. By adopting this updated name, the Centre aims to reach an even broader audience of conservationists, researchers, and environmental advocates, as well as inspire the public to take action for the oceans. This change comes at a critical time when the world’s oceans face unprecedented challenges, from climate change to overfishing and pollution.

An Urgent Mission: Advancing Marine Conservation and Community Engagement

The newly established Centre will tackle some of the most pressing issues facing marine ecosystems today. With a focus on advancing conservation through both scientific research and community engagement, its mission will encompass:

  • Securing Essential Grants: As part of their commitment to impactful research, the Centre will actively pursue grants and funding to support innovative projects. These projects aim to address critical issues, such as protecting vulnerable marine habitats and studying the effects of environmental changes on marine biodiversity.
  • Training Tomorrow’s Conservation Leaders: Recognizing the importance of mentorship in the field of marine science, the Centre will offer internships for aspiring marine biologists and environmental scientists. By providing hands-on experience and training, they aim to foster a new generation of conservationists equipped to make meaningful contributions.
  • Celebrating Conservation Achievements: Through awards for outstanding conservation efforts, the Centre will honour individuals and organizations who have made exceptional contributions to marine preservation. This program will not only celebrate these achievements but also motivate others to engage in ocean conservation efforts.

Rodney Fox: A Legacy of Shark Conservation

Rodney Fox’s remarkable journey into conservation began with a near-fatal shark encounter in 1963. Rather than turning away from the ocean, Rodney transformed his experience into a mission to protect these misunderstood creatures. He pioneered the first underwater observation cage for great white sharks, setting the standard for safe and ethical interactions that have revolutionized shark research. His work has been pivotal in shifting public perceptions of sharks and has been featured in numerous documentaries and films, inspiring global awareness about shark conservation.

Mark Tozer: Champion for Ocean Preservation and Research

Mark Tozer has been instrumental in advancing marine conservation. Alongside Rodney’s son, Andrew Fox, he co-owns Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions, which fosters a deeper appreciation and understanding of great white sharks and marine ecosystems. In addition to his work with the expeditions, Mark serves as a director of Sharks and Rays Australia, a research organization dedicated to studying and protecting endangered species of sharks and rays across Northern Australia. His role in Sharks and Rays Australia allows him to engage in crucial field research and conservation initiatives, particularly for species that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

In 2019, Mark established the Rodney Fox Shark Museum and Learning Centre, curating exhibits that feature vintage diving equipment, cave diving displays, ocean movies, and interactive presentations. These exhibits have inspired countless visitors to connect with and care for the ocean, establishing the museum as a cornerstone of ocean education and conservation.

A Timely Initiative for a World in Crisis

The establishment of the Rodney Fox and Mark Tozer Marine Conservation and Research Centre could not come at a more critical moment. Our oceans, which are essential to life on Earth, are facing unprecedented threats. Climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction are all putting immense pressure on marine ecosystems, endangering countless species and affecting global biodiversity. With their combined expertise and shared passion, Rodney and Mark are stepping up to provide a platform that fosters solutions to these urgent issues.

The new name and expanded mission reflect their ambition to reach a global network of conservationists and researchers while reinforcing the Centre’s role in educating the public. By engaging visitors in conversations about the realities facing our oceans and demonstrating what can be done to protect them, the Centre will inspire action and encourage a shared responsibility for ocean preservation.

Mark will also be establishing an executive committee of dedicated individuals who will meet once a month to discuss conservation efforts and environmental causes. In addition, we are actively seeking interns, as well as team members in media, finance, events, IT, and fundraising, all committed to helping make a difference in conservation and research. Together, we aim to create impactful solutions for our oceans.
